Okay so this year I finally got with the program. Here are a list of green things I am doing to hopefully make a difference.
Recycling – believe it or not in our neck of the woods, they make it hard for you to recycle- no pick up service. I haul my recyclables 13 miles to town, where I sort the brown and clear glasses into a receptable. The plastics? They go another 8 miles where you drop off quarterly.
Clothesline – Finally got the clothesline put up last week. Hung my first laundry since 1998.
Garden – Put a garden this year so we can eat locally. And, for the first time ever there is going to be a Farmer’s Market (in Florence), so I’m pretty excited about that one. Oh bought some turkeys too.
Been reading a bunch on global warming, water shortages, and the book of all books about eating locally – Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver. This book influenced my thinking so much that my friend Kieran and I wrote a song about it. Oh, that and we also entered the song in a contest to win $5,000, which is always a great incentive.

Hope the rest of the turkeys survive – chickens are good too! It really is the little steps though that add up to a better big picture. I have been attempting to stop using plastic stuff because it is so hard to recycle it around here. I tell ya that ain’t easy – plastics is EVERYWHERE!

Good to see you blogging, Judy! Have you read “In Defense of Food”? It too recommends local and homegrown. Luckily for the planet and our health gardening is catching on – all over again.

I just read Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, too. Loved it! My husband and I have been gardening up a storm, and my neighbor just brought me some rhubarb and some canning jars. Now, I just need to order to book on how to make my own cheese. What fun!
By the way, I’m Karen’s daughter. So I can see that this kind of local perspective runs in the family. Good stock!
