The other night we sat down to a totally local meal (well except for the salad dressing). We dined on fish from the local reservoir, and a salad fresh out of the garden. My daughter caught a 6 lb 24″ Wiper – much to her older brother’s chagrin. So far she is the top fisherwoman this season.

I couldn’t resist passing along this pic I found on The Natural Resource Defense Council blog I subscribe to. I am probably in the minority, but I welcome the high gas prices, if only to get people to pay attention that we have quite a problem on our hands. The sad piece in all this, is that there is real suffering out there (i.e. truckers) that won’t be going away for awhile because of the infrastructure that we have inherited. What do you think about gas prices, and global warming?

So for Summer Solstice we decided to create a fairy condo, complete with hot tub, amphitheater and fire circle. The fairy grounds are located in our new garden.

Disappointing news. My friend Kieran and I entered a song contest to win $5,000 for our organization and a few bucks for ourselves – we were not selected. So, darn.

I am posting the video here so you can decide for yourselves if the judges are all washed up. Oh, by the way the song had to be original and it had to be about a book or an author. It’s a tribute to Barbara Kingsolver and her book Animal, Vegetable, Mineral. Find in a library

Okay confession time. I cannot stop my self from subscribing to blogs! Just this morning I found myself trolling for more! At present, I have 31 blogs I subscribe to, and my unread posts number in the hundreds.

I am a librarian who is addicted to reading and to vast quantities of information, and I still can’t get a handle on it. I can hear all my unread post screaming to be read. Solution, my friends? Is there some 12 step program out there, do you think? I know I am not alone, so fess up.

One more thing, what’s your favorite blog? Just curious. DOH!

Okay, just some ramblings that came to mind as I was watching the coffee pot perculating this early Saturday morning. I picked my first strawberry yesterday – there is no beating fresh-picked succulents! I set aside two (for hubby and daughter) and went to plant a few zucchinis. Yeah, I know zucchinis multiply – I’ve heard. But, I am so excited about my garden this year that I am planting anything I can think of.! Anyway, as I was heading indoors I noticed the strawberries were missing. Nikki my dog looked a little sheepish, so I blamed it on her. Oh well, she must have found them as delicious and as mouth-watering as I did.

Speaking of animals, we have a 14 month old Arabian filly. Nice disposition, but oh boy can she get herself into trouble. A few weeks ago I was struggling to unwedge her head that was stuck between a gate and a fence post. After her head popped loose, her leg tangled with some barbed wire. So now I have to drain the wound (vet’s orders). Yeah right, she has decided that I can go soak my head.

I also got to thinking about how when I start out with projects I have this Utopian view of things. Take my garden for instance. I visualize what my garden will look like – how lush it is going to be – the bushels of produce I am going to pick. Then reality strikes, as I stand jaw ajar peering at a pepper plant that was mowed down (well crunched down) to the nub by some hungry pest. Dang.

Off to take my coffee into the garden to watch the butterflies flit, the turkeys peck, and the strawberries ripen.

Okay so this year I finally got with the program. Here are a list of green things I am doing to hopefully make a difference.

Recycling – believe it or not in our neck of the woods, they make it hard for you to recycle- no pick up service. I haul my recyclables 13 miles to town, where I sort the brown and clear glasses into a receptable. The plastics? They go another 8 miles where you drop off quarterly.

Clothesline – Finally got the clothesline put up last week. Hung my first laundry since 1998.

Garden – Put a garden this year so we can eat locally. And, for the first time ever there is going to be a Farmer’s Market (in Florence), so I’m pretty excited about that one. Oh bought some turkeys too.

Been reading a bunch on global warming, water shortages, and the book of all books about eating locally – Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver. This book influenced my thinking so much that my friend Kieran and I wrote a song about it. Oh, that and we also entered the song in a contest to win $5,000, which is always a great incentive.

Okay, this is my first official personal blog post. I am learning how to use WordPress, and actually finding it fun to tweak and customize. I am hoping to generate conversations here, because well heck it’s neat to see what others think. So, I invite you to comment and comment often. Off we go…
